Academy-Supported Malnutrition Measures Being Considered by CMS

12/06/2016 - All four of the Academy-supported malnutrition measures were accepted onto the CMS Measures under Consideration list. The MUC list includes approximately 100 measures that will be reviewed for consideration for inclusion in 18 federal health programs, including the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting, where the Academy expects the new malnutrition measures to be approved.

This quality initiative continues to advance RDNs and NDTRs as leaders within the health care arena and the promotion of the measures in hospital settings is the first step in the malnutrition continuum of care to ultimately excel implementation in post-acute care, business private practices and community populations.

Final approval will come later in 2017. Currently, the measures are being reviewed by the National Quality Forum’s Measure Applications Partnership, which will provide its recommendations to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services no later than Feb. 1, 2017. While HHS is required to consider MAP's recommendations, the CMS website notes the “final decisions about measure selection and implementation in public programs are solely in [the Department of Health and Human Service’s] authority.”
