Foundation Awards Scholarships 2017 2018

December 5, 2017

CHICAGO – The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation has awarded scholarships for the 2017-2018 academic year totaling more than $522,000 to 240 students at the undergraduate, graduate and continuing education levels.

The Academy's Foundation, the largest provider of scholarships in the dietetics field, has awarded more than $5 million in scholarships during the past 14 years to more than 3,800 students. Scholarships are funded by individual donors; the Academy's state and regional dietetic associations; dietetic practice groups; and partners, including Colgate-Palmolive Company, Commission on Dietetic Registration, ConAgra Foods, New Jersey Dietetic Association and Mead Johnson Nutrition.

Julie Harris, CPT, a 2017 Foundation scholarship recipient and a didactic student at University of Northern Colorado, expressed her gratitude for receiving the funding: "I am so honored and grateful to have been selected for the Foundation's Velmabelle Cornford Scholarship. Ultimately, I hope to contribute to the field of dietetics by pursuing a career in eating disorders."

"The Foundation is proud to support the future leaders of nutrition and dietetics through our robust scholarship program," said Academy Foundation Chair Martin Yadrick, MS, MBI, RDN, FAND. "We are especially grateful to our extremely generous Academy members who allow us to continue providing dietetic students with the support they need to flourish."

Each year, the Foundation receives as many as 780 scholarship applications that are reviewed by the Foundation's Scholarship Committee.

All registered dietitians are nutritionists – but not all nutritionists are registered dietitians. The Academy's Board of Directors and Commission on Dietetic Registration have determined that those who hold the credential registered dietitian (RD) may optionally use "registered dietitian nutritionist" (RDN) instead. The two credentials have identical meanings.
