Why the Academy Changed Its Name

From its inception in 1917 until January 2012, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics — the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals — was known as the American Dietetic Association.

In order to progress and meet the needs of the changing field of nutrition, the organization made a decision to add academy to the name. The addition of academy promotes the strong science background and emphasizes the academic expertise of its members, mostly registered dietitian nutritionists.

With nutrition in the name, we communicate our members' strength for turning nutrition science into easily understandable information for everyone to live healthier lifestyles. Keeping dietetics retains our history — a history founded in food and science-based practice.

Our name communicates who we are and what we do. We are the nutrition experts — the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
