Description

Maintaining the delicate balance of fluids and electrolytes is of utmost importance in achieving optimal patient outcomes, especially when dealing with individuals who require specialized nutrition support. Dietitians, as key members of the healthcare team, are central to achieving this balance and providing the best care possible. In this lecture, we will explore practical applications and facilitate discussions on managing fluids and electrolytes for both pediatric and adult patients reliant on enteral and parenteral nutrition.Through a combination of case studies and quiz questions participants will learn and apply the concepts discussed during this session and leave with increased confidence in assessing patient needs, designing tailored nutrition plans, and adjusting nutrition support prescriptions to meet patient needs. Join us to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to elevate your practice and contribute to improved patient outcomes in the acute care setting.

  • Describe fundamental principles governing fluid and electrolyte balance, including the physiological mechanisms, sources of fluid and electrolyte disturbances, and their clinical implications.
  • Recognize signs of imbalance, determine appropriate interventions, and monitor effectiveness of interventions for optimal outcomes.
  • Demonstrate confidence in making informed decisions regarding fluid and electrolyte management of adult and pediatric patients receiving nutrition support.

    Kristen Quisenberry

    Clinical Dietitian, Palmetto Infusion

    Kristen Quisenberry, RD,LD,CNSC, is a Clinical Dietitian for Palmetto Infusion Services and a consulting specialist for Nutrition Support Specialty Care, LLC. She has nearly 20 years of experience as a clinical dietitian, focusing primarily in nutrition support. Prior to working in home nutrition support, she specialized in critical care nutrition at the Medical University of South Carolina. There she served as the MICU dietitian for nearly 10 years and was a founding member of the small bowel feeding tube placement team. She is a strong proponent of professional leadership and volunteerism, having served in various capacities throughout her career in local, state and national dietetics organizations. She is currently serving as the House of Delegates representative for the Dietitians in Nutrition Support DPG.

    Alyson Lawrence

    Clinical Dietitian, CHOC Children’s Hospital

    Alyson Lawrence, RD, CNSC is a neonatal dietitian at CHOC Children’s Hospital in Orange, CA. She completed her dietetic internship through Cal Poly Pomona followed by her pediatric residency at CHOC Children’s. Alyson has worked in a wide variety of pediatric areas, ranging from pediatric intensive care to her current role in the neonatal intensive care unit. She has a special interest in neonatal patients with short bowel syndrome and intestinal failure. Alyson is involved in many research projects and committees within her institution focused on enhancing knowledge and improving patient care. She also is an active member of ASPEN, serving as an author for the GI section of the Neonatal Newsletter and is a content creator for the Dietitians in Nutrition Support YouTube Channel.

    Nikki Kendrick

    Clinical Associate Professor, Utah State University

    Nikki Kendrick, MDA, RDN, CNSC is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Nutrition, Dietetics and Food Sciences department at Utah State University where she teaches and mentors future dietitians in the Master of Dietetics Administration program. Prior to her career in academia, Nikki worked as a clinical dietitian at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Salt Lake Regional Medical Center. She uses her practice experience to enhance student learning with practical work experience and insight. Teaching students about medical nutrition therapy, specifically nutrition support and critical care nutrition, are her favorite experiences. In addition to her teaching, Nikki is dedicated to advancing the dietetics profession through advocating for the profession and encouraging other dietitians to serve and lead where they can. Nikki served the Utah Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as the Nutrition Services Payment Specialist from 2014 to 2019 and participated in advocacy efforts and the state and national level. She also served the Dietitians in Nutrition Support DPG in this role from 2019 to 2023. She served as the Utah Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics President from 2021-2022 and currently serves as the chair of Dietitians in Nutrition Support Chair for the 2024-205 year.
