Academy CEO to Retire in 2023

Patricia Babjak

Three years ago, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Chief Executive Officer Patricia Babjak shared her intention to retire in 2023. Babjak served in numerous positions at the Academy since 1975 and has led the organization as CEO for 14 years. In 2004, in recognition of her service to the Academy and to the nutrition and dietetics profession, Babjak was awarded honorary Academy membership.

"The Academy's accomplishments during Pat's tenure speak for themselves," said Academy President Ellen Shanley, MBA, RDN, CDN, FAND. "She has guided us through significant transitions, putting our organization and our profession in an excellent position to continue to serve all Academy members and the public, nationally and globally."

Notable examples of Babjak's leadership include implementation of the Academy's Strategic Plan; mechanisms to measure progress toward goals and objectives; and an organization-wide emphasis on the roles of food, family, community and diversity in nutrition and dietetics. Babjak successfully led the Academy through the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring programs and services continued, and supporting and serving the needs of members during the transition to remote work and online education.

"Pat has stewarded the Academy with professionalism, honor and distinction," Shanley said. "The far-reaching impact of her leadership is reflected in the Academy's tremendous successes in advocacy, quality management, research, education and more."

In April 2022, the Board established a CEO search committee comprised of Academy current and former leaders and representatives from the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics and the Commission on Dietetic Registration. In addition to reviewing and setting qualifications and priorities for the Chief Executive Officer position, the search committee conducted a formal Request for Proposal and in October, secured global organizational consulting firm Korn Ferry to lead national recruitment efforts and support a thorough, equitable and transparent process. The information and position description will be posted on eatrightPRO.org in early December.

To ensure a smooth and seamless transition, Babjak will continue leading the Academy until a new CEO is hired.
