Quality Improvement

The Academy Standards of Excellence in Nutrition and Dietetics for Organization Self-Assessment and Quality Improvement is a tool to measure and evaluate an organization's programs, services and initiatives that identify and distinguish the RDN brand as the professional expert in food and nutrition. Standards of Excellence criteria apply to all practice segments of nutrition and dietetics: health care, education and research, business and industry, and community nutrition and public health.

Quality Improvement (QI) uses techniques to assess and improve internal operations. QI focuses on organizational systems to improve quality which involves setting goals, implementing systematic changes, measuring outcomes and making subsequent improvements.

Performance Improvement (PI) focuses on individual performance to correct errors when safety thresholds are crossed. PI studies processes which the intent to prevent or decrease the likelihood of problems by identifying areas of opportunity and testing new approaches to fix underlying causes of persistent problems.
