In order to clearly document the impact on patient care, the Academy, and its committees, are dedicated to creating a standardized language that captures the specifics of what the dietetics profession does — ensuring that individuals can clearly articulate the exact nature of the nutrition problem and specifically describe what intervention was accomplished along with the goals and approaches. Using a standardized language gives the ability to explore and understand the links between nutrition problems, interventions used and associated outcomes.
The Nutrition Care Process Terminology, or NCPT, assists nutrition and dietetics practitioners document their work in all patient care settings. The NCPT was developed with broad global input from practitioners and researchers and contains more than 1,000 terms categorized to describe the four steps of the nutrition care process: nutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis, nutrition intervention and nutrition monitoring and evaluation. Most of the terms have been matched and modeled for inclusion in SNOMED CT (Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine—Clinical Terms) and LOINC ® (Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes), which are clinical standardized terminologies in use in the United States and around the world in electronic health records. Designed for use in the electronic health record, the NCPT provides specific terminology for data collection for nutrition research and documentation of quality measures.
