Academy's Policy Comments Reflect Priorities

08/10/2017 - In three sets of formal comments to federal agencies, the Academy underscored our policy priorities and stances and offered specific suggestions for improving policy to make it more effective and efficient for the public and Academy members. The Academy led a sign-on letter with partners urging the U.S. Department of Agriculture to adopt strategies to improve elderly access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to ensure a vulnerable and under-resourced population has food options available.

The Academy also offered ways for USDA to improve procurement practices for school food authorities, specifically by encouraging the Food and Nutrition Service to work with states to provide additional training opportunities prior to assessment of procurement practices and ultimately data collection, analysis and corrective action. And the Academy reiterated our support for menu labeling at restaurant chains and other large food establishments without additional delay, given its promise to help consumers select healthier food options.
