Remarks by Academy President Lucille Beseler, MS, RDN, LDN, CDE, FAND
Good morning, everyone.
It is a pleasure for me to represent the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, and to open NASDAQ's trading day with our message of "eating right."
I'm very happy to be joined by Academy members who live and work in the New York area. A native New Yorker that now lives in Florida, I am thrilled to be back home. I was born in Queens. A few miles from here my grandmother a turn-of-the-century immigrant from Italy settled – right off the boat.
At about the same time my grandmother came to this country, dozens of brave, farsighted women were gathering in Cleveland, in the fall of 1917, to create the world’s first organization of dietitians – today known as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
This year, the Academy is celebrating our centennial and preparing for our Second Century.
As a registered dietitian nutritionist and the President of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, I am proud to represent more than 100,000 professionals.
Academy members help consumers make informed food choices and develop sound eating and physical activity habits. We provide the public with trusted, timely and accurate nutrition information.
Nutrition is a science-based field, not a fad-based field.
Through our education (I myself am an NYU grad), our knowledge and experience, registered dietitian nutritionists are the experts in translating the science of nutrition into practical advice – for adults, children, the elderly, those with chronic diseases, and for people who want to achieve a healthy weight, maintain good health or reverse and manage disease such as heart disease and diabetes.
If you have a chronic disease like diabetes or heart disease you need a registered dietitian nutritionist.
We collaborate with other health care providers. Academy members work in hospitals and medical centers, in long-term care facilities, universities, school districts, in the military, with sports teams and for corporations.
We run foodservice operations, manage worksite wellness programs, counsel clients and patients, work in public health and conduct scientific research. We own our own business and employ others.
We help everyone understand the scientific role of nutrition and how food impacts our lives… to reach and maintain a healthy weight … and to prevent and manage diseases … while enjoying delicious foods that fit your lifestyle and your tastes.
