Better Care for People with Diabetes and Related Disorders: Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Commends Congress and President for Creating Clinical Care Commission

November 2, 2017

CHICAGO – The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics commends Congress and President Trump for enacting the National Clinical Care Commission Act. The bill creates a commission to evaluate and recommend solutions for better coordination and use of federal programs to support care for people with diabetes and metabolic syndromes and disorders.

The commission will consist of health care experts including registered dietitian nutritionists who will offer practical insights on how to improve clinical care for people with diabetes. Thirty-five federal agencies have programs or policies that relate to diabetes.

"Diabetes is the seventh-leading cause of death in the U.S. and accounts annually for more than 37 million ambulatory care visits," said registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy President Donna Martin. "The Academy believes the National Clinical Care Commission Act is critical to improve patients' access to nutrition services to prevent diabetes."

The legislation was sponsored by U.S. Reps. Dave Loebsack (Iowa) and Pete Olson (Texas) and U.S. Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.).

The Academy represents more than 100,000 food and nutrition professionals throughout the U.S. and the world.

All registered dietitians are nutritionists – but not all nutritionists are registered dietitians. The Academy's Board of Directors and Commission on Dietetic Registration have determined that those who hold the credential registered dietitian (RD) may optionally use "registered dietitian nutritionist" (RDN) instead. The two credentials have identical meanings.
