CHICAGO – The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation has awarded scholarships for the 2016-2017 academic year totaling more than $485,000 to 334 students at the undergraduate, graduate and continuing education levels.
The Academy's Foundation, the largest provider of scholarships in the dietetics field, has awarded more than $5 million in scholarships during the past 14 years to more than 3,800 students. Scholarships are funded by individual donors; the Academy's state and regional dietetic associations; dietetic practice groups; and partners, including Colgate-Palmolive Company, Commission on Dietetic Registration, ConAgra Foods, New Jersey Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and Mead Johnson Nutrition.
Christine Patella, RDN, LD, a 2016 Foundation scholarship recipient and a doctoral student at Oklahoma State University, expressed her gratitude for receiving the funding: "I'm overwhelmed and grateful for receiving the CDR Doctoral Scholarship from the Foundation. This scholarship will help me to continue pursuing research in the area of global malnutrition."
"The Foundation is proud to be the largest provider of scholarships supporting the future leaders of our field," said Academy Foundation Chair Jean Ragalie-Carr, RDN, LDN, FAND. "We are thankful for the generous support from Academy members that allow us to continue providing dietetic students with the support they need to become successful."
Each year, the Foundation receives as many as 750 scholarship applications that are reviewed by the Foundation's Scholarship Committee.
All registered dietitians are nutritionists – but not all nutritionists are registered dietitians. The Academy's Board of Directors and Commission on Dietetic Registration have determined that those who hold the credential registered dietitian (RD) may optionally use "registered dietitian nutritionist" (RDN) instead. The two credentials have identical meanings.
